Alder College celebrated its 33rd Freshers’ Day 2025 at Dr. Setu Memorial Hall, Alder College Kohima on 11th August 2025 with MLA, Kohima town, Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso as the Guest of Honour.

Dr. Rhütso, in his short speech, gave a message to everyone by quoting the famous phrase ‘Try ignorance if you think education is expensive’, conveying that education is the most important part of one’s life to become successful. He also emphasized on holistic education to skill up and refine oneself.

He highlighted on his background and the struggles he faced during his career as a student. He said that dedication towards one’s aim in life is the most important besides time management and positive attitude.

He further encouraged the students to truly work hard and pass out as good graduates rather than mere degree holders as there may be endless possibilities but nothing comes easy.

Principal, Alder College, Dr. Medotsino T. Nakhro, in her address said that this is a special phase in one’s academic life, marking the beginning of the exciting journey into higher education.

Highlighting about the College, she mentioned that Alder College is a premier educational institution of higher education in Nagaland, founded in 1992. The acknowledgement from the National Accreditation and Assessment Council in 2016, and then again in February 2025 when the 2nd NAAC assessment took place were given the B+ grade status.  She emphasized that the institution prioritises pursuit of academic excellence, value education and the importance of learning socially which is not confined to the text rather offers a wide range of courses across the departments, skill based and value courses, designed to nurture intellectual curiosity and prepare for the future.

She stated that starting with the present academic session, Alder College has introduced the Four Year degree program in 6 disciplines, becoming the first college in Kohima district to embrace the FYUGP program structured under NEP 2020. The College has also introduced Tenyidie (Major) in the college.

She added that the College always upheld traditional values and ethos which is evident from the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The College has also adopted Naga Wrestling as one of its best practices. Since 2013, the college has featured Naga Wrestling during its Annual Sports Week, offering students an opportunity to connect with their heritage through sports. In 2022, the College successfully hosted the first Inter-Collegiate Naga Wrestling Competition, drawing participation from multiple institutions. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, this initiative promotes holistic education that integrates local traditions, encourages physical and moral development, and contributes to community engagement. Another event is the Alder Fest that provides a platform for students to showcase their talents, fostering skills in marketing management, dignity of labour, and collaborative learning.

She further highlighted that the College also secured the 1st Runner’s Up position at Nationwide Quiz Contest on Official Statistics organised by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, Govt of India, and the 1st and 2nd positions at the District-level Youth Parliament Event organised by the Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports.

Nakhro urged each student to demonstrate strong discipline and consistent effort in their academic pursuits, to make the most of their time building strong relationships, engage in extracurricular activities, and strive for excellence in all.
