The state-level observation of the International Day of Older Persons 2025 and commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Senior Citizens' Association of Nagaland, with the theme "Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Right" was held at the Capital Convention Centre, Kohima, on October 1, 2025.

Special Guest and Advisor, Social Welfare, Wangpang Konyak in his address said that the day is not just a celebration, but also a reminder of the invaluable roles played by our elders in the fabric of our Naga society.

He stated that the theme for this year, "Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-being, Our Rights," resonates deeply with the spirit of Nagaland since senior citizens are the pillars of our culture, carrying the rich traditions, stories, and wisdom of our tribes. He urged them to keep sharing the vision, because their experiences light the path for the upcoming generations and their stories serve as mentors, caregivers and community leaders who inspire the younger generation to be resilient and to remain motivated. He also added that well-being is equally critical therefore he reassured them that the government is committed to a better support system, improved medical facilities through CMHIS and through social assistance schemes.

He also stated that their rights must be safeguarded, as with a rapidly ageing population in a society like ours where respect for elders is a cherished value, and therefore we must ensure it translates into action, fair treatment.

Konak stated that on a global stage, Nagaland's unique blend of traditions and resilience can be a model for the world, showing how older persons can lead change in the community and as we mark the 25 years of the Senior Citizens' Association, reflecting on the milestones achieved and the work ahead so as to build a Nagaland where every senior citizen is honored, supported, and empowered.

He also urged everyone to advocate strongly for the rights and well-being of the elders, and to work together to create a world where ageing is celebrated and every person can live with dignity and purpose.

Secretary of Social Welfare, Limawabang Jamir, IAS in his keynote address said that the theme reminded him of the essential role that older individuals play in shaping the world around us. This day is not just about recognising the challenges faced by older persons but also celebrating their contributions to society, their wisdom, and their invaluable experiences.

He mentioned that on this day it was important to raise voices to shed light on the issues affecting older individuals, to promote their rights, and to ensure that their well-being remains a priority. He stated that the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Gol has been working tirelessly to create an inclusive and equitable society. With the establishment of 12 Senior Citizens Homes across the state, funded by the Ministry and implemented by various NGOs, the department is ensuring that senior citizens have a safe place where they can receive care, love, and respect. Additionally, the Department has also implemented schemes like Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), under which cataract surgeries are conducted and training of geriatric caregivers is imparted, serving as essential tools to improve the quality of life for the elderly. Awareness campaigns are also organised to ensure that society remains informed about the challenges and rights of older individuals. Through initiatives like the IGNOAP scheme, financial assistance is provided to senior citizens from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families, ensuring they have the support they need to live with dignity.

He also reiterated that, on this International Day of Older Persons, one should reaffirm the responsibility as a society and as a government.

Meanwhile, the ‘Distinguished Senior Citizen Award’ was presented to Neidonuo Angami and Rev. Dr L. Anjo Keikung for their outstanding contribution towards society and the State.

Earlier, the Special Guest also released the Jubilee Souvenir of the Senior Citizens' Association of Nagaland.
