Following reports of death of a number of pigs, from the Village Council Chairman, Merapani, (Marachu Yan) and from the Office of the Assistant Veterinary Surgeon, Merapani, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhandari, Longasen Lotha, NCS has issued a directive banning slaughter of pigs, import and export of pigs and piglets, as well as transport of live pigs and pork (meat) from Merapani area until further notice, with a view to contain the suspected outbreak of swine fever.
Meanwhile, confirming the outbreak of disease amongst swine population in Merapani Village, Dr. Kikali G. Sumi, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, (VAS) Quarantine Check Post, Merapani, informed that African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious haemorrhagic viral disease of domestic and wild pigs which may result in 100% mortality rate, causing loss to the economy.
She sensitized the public to observe and take note of signs and symptoms which include reddening of skin, abdomen, legs and ears accompanied by cases of fever, loss of appetite, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as abortion in pregnant sows, adding that most death occur within ten days.
She also cautioned that although African Swine Fever is not a zoonotic disease and does not pose health risk to humans, yet public should remain vigilant and avoid slaughter of sick pigs for consumption of pork, and exercise proper disposal of carcass according to veterinary advice to contain further spread of the outbreak.
She further notified the public to report any such cases to their nearest Veterinary Health Centres without delay.
