An Awareness Programme under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) was organised by the District Administration, Dimapur in Collaboration with St. John College and eCircle on 30th of September 2025 at Chapel Hall, St. John College, Dimapur, on the theme “E-Waste and Air Quality: The Hidden Dangers.” This awareness programme is to bring together faculty and students to tackle e-waste challenges under the broader framework of NCAP. The programme was chaired by Nungshilemmla, HoD, Department of History, SJC.and the welcome address by Dr Chubatila, Principal of St. John College.
In the keynote address from Imlijungla, EAC Dimapur, said that the stress on the urgent need for public awareness and collective action in managing electronic waste to protect air quality and public health should know about the E-waste management, where it is one of the most harmful chemicals that we breathe when we burn e-waste.
She emphasised that along with plantation programs and improved waste management, e-waste is equally important. When burnt, e-waste releases harmful toxins that severely pollute the air. She encouraged students to collect and dispose of e-waste separately and responsibly. Be a part of this drive to keep our air clean. Recognise the issue, be part of the solution, and encourage one another by sharing what we learn. Together, we can take our state toward a much-needed greener and cleaner Dimapur, she said.
Speaking on E-Waste and Air Quality Management, Sowete-u K. Lekro, Founder and Managing Partner of eCIRCLE, shared practical insights on safe disposal methods and sustainable practices. She highlighted that India is the third-largest producer of e-waste in the world, after China and the United States, with volumes increasing by nearly 20% every year. Shockingly, only 5% of the total e-waste generated is recycled annually. She underscored the urgent need for better systems, awareness, and public participation in responsibility for e-waste management and to make use of e-waste management in different ways of recycling and urged the students to share what they have learned about this e-waste management.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Soumyajit Pramanick, HoD, Department of Physics, SJC and the invocation was given by Keshenle Seb, HoD, Political Science, SJC. Dev Ram, Department of Physics (Semester V), briefed the gathering on the upcoming e-waste collection drive initiated by the college.
